Identity and self understanding
Identity, according to Jungian perspective, is like understanding the different layers that make us who we are. It's about putting together all these different parts of ourselves, almost like puzzle pieces. In therapy, we use ideas from Jung, along with models like Erikson's stages and Marcia's identity statuses, to explore how people develop a sense of who they are.
Jung believed in something called 'individuation,' which is basically about finding and fitting together parts of ourselves that we might not even know much about. It's a bit like finding missing pieces of ourselves and making ourselves feel more complete.
Therapy using these ideas helps us figure out those hidden parts of ourselves and bring them into our everyday life. Erikson's stages show how people search for who they are at different times in their life, while Marcia's ideas focus on how we figure out what's important to us and what roles we want to take on.
By mixing these ideas, therapy helps us learn about our unique journey in finding ourselves. It's about understanding both the parts of ourselves we already know and those that are hidden, and it guides us through different stages of learning about ourselves. The goal is to feel more like our true selves, feeling balanced and comfortable with who we are and what we value in life."
